Working with SteadFast
What does SteadFast Transportation Inc. do?
SteadFast holds and administers USPS transportation route contracts, primarily Contract Delivery Service (CDS) routes, and fulfills them through written agreements with qualified independent owner-operators. We manage compliance, communication, and payment for each route.
Is this employment?
No. The opportunities described on this site are for independent contractors who operate their own businesses under written agreements. Submitting an inquiry does not create an offer of employment and does not guarantee route availability.
Do I ever pay SteadFast any fees?
No. SteadFast does not charge inquiry fees, onboarding fees, or starter-kit fees, and requires no purchases. Contractors are responsible only for their own ordinary business expenses, such as vehicle, fuel, insurance, and taxes.
Is SteadFast part of the U.S. Postal Service?
No. SteadFast Transportation Inc. is an independent company that contracts with the USPS. It is not an agent of, and is not endorsed by, the USPS or any other federal agency.
Requirements and onboarding
What are the most common requirements?
Most routes require a suitable vehicle, commercial auto insurance, and completion of required screening and clearance steps. Requirements vary by route and are confirmed during the inquiry and onboarding process.
Do I need a CDL?
Most routes do not require a commercial driver’s license, but requirements vary. If a route requires a CDL or specific endorsements, we will discuss it before any agreement is signed.
What does USPS clearance involve?
Some routes require background, safety, or compliance screenings before work begins. We explain the specific steps required for the route you are pursuing.
How long does onboarding take?
Timing depends on route needs and required screenings. Some contractors complete the process within days; others take longer. We provide an expected timeline once a route match is identified.
Can I hire help or use a substitute driver?
Policies depend on the route and contract requirements. In most cases, a substitute driver must be approved in advance and meet the same screening requirements.
What happens if I am sick or have an emergency?
Routes are time-sensitive and require reliable coverage. Agreements typically require advance notice and an approved coverage plan, so we recommend arranging backup options and communicating early.
Compensation and expenses
How is contractor compensation structured?
Compensation is route-specific and set in your written agreement before you begin. Contractors typically receive a fixed daily rate for the assigned route.
How often are contractors paid?
Payment timing is defined in the written agreement. Contractors are typically paid twice monthly by direct deposit, on the 1st and the 15th.
What expenses should I plan for?
Typical expenses include fuel, vehicle payments or lease costs, maintenance, tires, insurance, licensing and permits, and self-employment taxes. Costs vary by route distance, geography, and vehicle type.
Do you provide a vehicle or reimburse fuel?
Contractors generally provide and maintain their own vehicles and cover fuel and operating costs. Any exception would be stated explicitly in the written agreement.
Will I receive a W-2 or a 1099?
Independent contractors generally receive IRS Form 1099-NEC and are responsible for their own tax filings. This is general information only; please consult a tax professional.
Routes and coverage
Are routes currently available?
All routes listed on this site are under contract and currently staffed. Availability changes over time; submitting a contractor inquiry places you in our review process but does not guarantee route availability or selection.
Where are your routes located?
Our Routes & Coverage page lists every route identifier and post office location on an interactive map. Exact service areas are defined in each route agreement.
How quickly will I hear back?
We respond to contractor inquiries within 48 hours. For time-sensitive questions, call or text (813) 686-4559, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time.
